Learn about anemia:

Anemia is neglected in most developing countries. However, it is one of the public health problems. Although anemia has been identified as a public health problem in our country, no measures have been taken to create awareness and prevent it. Therefore, many mothers and children die every year due to anemia-related complications. About 50 percent of anemia is due to iron deficiency, and at least one million people die every year in the world, three-quarters of whom die in Africa and Southeast Asia.

What is anemia?

The critical component of blood in our body is red blood cells, and the lifeblood of red blood cells is hemoglobin. Again, we need oxygen to survive. When the level or amount of hemoglobin in the blood decreases for some reason, that condition is called anemia.

What is the normal level of hemoglobin?

Usually, the amount of hemoglobin in a newborn baby's body at birth is 200 g/liter. Later, it starts decreasing from the age of three months and becomes almost half of its original value. Later, hemoglobin levels begin to increase again at the time of maturity. For men, the normal range of hemoglobin is 130-180 g/L, and for women, it is 115-165 g/L. In this case, whether it is a man or a woman, if someone's hemoglobin is 70 or 80 g/liter, then it is identified as severe anemia.

What are the signs or symptoms of anemia?

In most people, it is not possible to identify specific symptoms of anemia, nor can anemia be diagnosed solely by examining the symptoms. However, in this case, if several symptoms are present simultaneously, it is crucial to undergo a blood test.

* The body will be pale and sweat profusely. * The chest will palpitate. * The pulse will be fast.

* There will be a headache along with dizziness. * Blurred or reduced vision in the eyes. * Sores in the corners of the mouth and on the tongue.

* Iron deficiency anemia, keloids. * Weakness and fatigue. * Digestive problems.

* Swelling of the whole body. * Swelling of the feet. * Shortness of breath.

* Insomnia or lack of sleep. * Angina. * Enlarged heart.

* Rapid heartbeat. * Systolic flow murmur, etc.

What are the causes of anemia?

The iron present in the body's hemoglobin organizes oxygen in the lungs and distributes that oxygen to the body cells for energy. Therefore, iron deficiency is considered a primary cause of anemia. The causes are-

* Insufficient hemoglobin production. * Excessive destruction of red blood cells.

* Iron deficiency and blood loss caused by worms, especially hookworms. * Excessive menstrual bleeding.

* Frequent pregnancy and breastfeeding. * Deficiency of folic acid, vitamin A, and vitamin B-12.

* Thalassemia, i.e., congenital problems in the production of hemoglobin. * Gastric bypass surgery.

* Hypothyroidism. * Liver problems. * Malaria fever. * Consumption of alcoholic beverages. * Blood in stools, etc.

Prevalence of Anemia:-

Anemia will be considered a serious public health disaster when its level is below 40 percent in any category or level. In this case, pregnant mothers and children under 2 years of age will be on the list of dangerous disasters of anemia because their iron requirement is slightly higher than that of other adults. The prevalence of anemia is high in South Asia. Pregnant mothers and children die almost every year in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal.

Treatment:

Treatment of anemia or anemia is almost its prevention. In the case of anemia, it is recommended to consume foods and supplements containing a high amount of iron, vitamins, and folate. However, the condition of patients suffering from anemia requires close monitoring, and treatment and care should be provided accordingly. Therefore, it is time to avoid ignorance or indifference about anemia; otherwise, pregnant mothers and innocent children may die every day.
